Gong Hei Fatt Choi !! (Cantonese greeting for a Prosperous & Happy New Year)
As usual pictures are here
http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/displaced_chinaman/my_photos
1. Scallops & broccoli
2. Deep fried stuffed fish
3. Yu Shang(raw fish toss salad)
4. Braised sea cucumbers & veg.
5. Spicy sweet & sour prawns
6. Green veg. (a kind of Chinese lettuce/cabbage?)
7. Double cooked pork
8. Drunken chicken
9. Shark's fin soup
10. HorYipFan(rice cooked with Chinese sausages, meats etc. wrapped in lotus
leaves-served w/o the leaves)
All 8 dishes have symbolic meanings in Cantonese. The word for 'fish' sounds
& rhymes with the words for prosperity & good fortune, hence quite a few
fish dishes are served. The word for 'prawns' (Ha) sounds like laughter &
the dish is red in colour, a festive colour. The name for that particular
green veg. (Shang Choi) sounds like 'to born' = a new life or a new start.
The double cooked pork has a story behind it as well but i forget... i just
like to eat it! The chicken dish is also symbolic to a new life & hence new
year. The shark's fin as well has a meaning but again me forgets... The
lotus leave rice 'HoYipFan' = good fortune rice as 'Ho' sounds identical to
the Chinese word for good fortune/good luck. Finally... 8 dishes are served
because the Cantonese word for 8 is Paat & sounds like Fatt (to prosper) as
in the Cantonese new year greeting... Gong Hei Fatt Choi.
